WWE 2006 - a Year in Review
Well…the last Raw of 2006 has aired, and the WWE is preparing for 2007 as we speak. It’s time to take a quick look back at what the WWE has done with 2006, and see if we can get an idea of where World Wrestling Entertainment is headed in 2007.
The year started off great. A hot feud between HHH and John Cena, the SHOCK of Edge winning the WWE title, and the addition of Bret Hart to the WWE Hall of Fame where all huge events for the WWE. Wrestlemania 21 was everything you could ask for in a PPV event. From ridiciously entrances, to top level matches, Wrestlemania 21 was the pinacle of what you can expect from modern professional wrestling.
Then, the day after, things started going down hill. John Cena Vs. Edge pushed us through the summer, and the crowd couldn’t decide if they wanted to route for Cena, or burn him at the stake (something they still haven’t figured out). The WWE Saturday Night Main Event specials were huge ratings disappointments.
On the ECW front, fandom was fueling a return for the hardcore brand, and what was once just a one time PPV special turned into a full blown return with Paul Heyman in the driver’s seat (as much as possible, anyway)…but it too fell short, when the first show completely bombed, and then a few weeks later, WWE and ECW Champion Rob Van Dam was busted for drug possession. ECW has gone steadily downhill ever since, and Paul Heyman is no longer involved.
On Smackdown the ghost of Eddie Guerro still haunts the squared circle, with references to the former World Champion made on a weekly basis. New talent like MVP and Mr. Kennedy are trying to make places for themselves with established stars like Batista and the Undertaker…but horrible gimmicks like King Booker, bring the show down, and make it hard to enjoy.
All in all, 2006 was a terrible year for the WWE, and they’re starting 2007 off with a Main Event featuring Cena Vs. Britney Spear’s ex-husband….wow…not a good start…
