SMACKDOWN ****SPOILERS****

Smackdown! AIR DATE 5/29/09

Dark Match Main Event #1 (after the conclusion of ECW) Batista vs. WWE Champion Randy Orton inside a steel cage for the WWE Championship:

Orton enters the cage first then Batista (w/pyro) makes his entrance. Orton attempts to make a quick
Escape from the cage but Batista quickly pulls him down onto the ring floor. After some offense by The
Animal, Orton takes control and begins to stomp away at the arms and legs of Batista. The Animal
quickly regains control with a powerful spinebuster on Orton and attempts the Batista Bomb when Ted
Dibiase runs out to the cage and attempts to climb the cage on the outside only to be met with a
shoulder block on the cage wall, pushing Dibiase off the cage and onto the mat. With Batista focused on Dibiase on the outside, Orton is locked on set to hit the RKO on Batista but he counters out of it, pushing Orton right into the cage wall and Orton immediately begins his escape out of the cage. Batista attempts to pull down Orton a second time but Dibiase interferes with Batista allowing Orton to make his escape over the top and outside the cage for the win. After the match, Dibiase attempts to escape through the cage door only to find it locked from the outside. Orton has already headed to the back abandoning his fellow Legacy teammate who is then subject to the wrath and force of the Batista Bomb. The cage is lifted and Batista high-fives the fans at ringside (except for one fan in particular who received the finger instead).

Smackdown Set-up:

Jim Ross followed by Todd Grisham head out to ringside to announce this week’s Smackdown!

Smackdown Segment Summary:

No opening music or pyro for this week

Rey Mysterio comes out to the ring to a loud pop and praises the fans here in Los Angeles. Talks about his upcoming No Holds Barred Match with Chris Jericho and says that not only will be able to hit the 619 at any time, he can also hit the 213, the 323, the 310, and the 818 on Jericho as well! Jericho interrupts Mysterio and continues to bad-mouth Mysterio and Mickey Rourke (who was in attendance at ringside and shown on the titantron). Jericho goes on to mention how he’s too much of a professional to not come over there, hop over that ring barrier and punch his lights out. Rourke remains seated with a sly smile and a gesture to bring it on. Jericho attempts to attack Mysterio but counters and attempts to hit the 619 on a prone Jericho but he escapes out of the ring and to the back.

Match 1: R-Truth & The Great Khali vs. Mike Knox & Dolph Ziggler

Typical tag match with both sides getting in a fair amount of offense. Ziggler abandons his partner towards the end of the match, leaving Knox in the ring to deal with Khali. One giant Khali Bomb and the cover on Knox results in Khali and R-Truth getting the win via pinfall.

Match 2: WWE Women’s Champion Melina vs. Alicia Fox (accompanied by Michelle McCool)
Fox managed to get some offense in on Melina despite some outside interference by McCool. Despite this, Melina connects with her split-legged leg drop on Fox for the cover and pinfall. Post match, Michelle grabs the Women’s Title out of referee Jack Doan’s hands and stares directly at the title only to shove the title over to Melina.

Interview segment: Josh Matthews interviews John Morrison
Morrison talks about his upcoming match with Umaga later tonight and goes on to mention Haas and Benjamin, referring to them as the World’s Most Forgotten Tag Team.

Jeff Hardy is seen walking backstage towards the ring, he’s coming up next!

Hardy out to the ring and talks about why he chose a Ladder Match for his match against Edge at Extreme Rules

Match #3: Umaga vs. John Morrison
Umaga out to the ring first with a leather strap in hand. Morrison out next to a loud pop from the crowd (and a Mor-ri-son chant from the ringside section). A great match between these two superstars, Morrison is certainly something to see and watch at ringside. Umaga has Morrison in the tree of woe, using the leather strap to tie him to the turnbuckle when CM Punk runs into the ring and delivers a shot to Umaga using his Money in the Bank Briefcase causing the Disqualification (your winner: Umaga). Post match, we have Umaga in the corner as CM Punk hits his running knee lift followed by a bulldog on Umaga onto the MITB briefcase. CM Punk celebrates and remains in the ring as Todd Grisham steps inside and interviews CM Punk on what his strategy is in his Samoan Strap Match against Umaga at Extreme Rules. Punk says that I’m outweighed, out muscled against the Samoan Bulldozer but I do have one advantage: and that Umaga is no CM Punk!

Match 4: Cryme Tyme vs. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin

Nothing extraordinary here in this tag match (although Shad had some choice words for a fan sitting at ringside). Benjamin hits Paydirt out of nowhere on Shad for the win.

Match 5: Eve vs. Layla

Match quickly spills to the outside for a minute as Eve gets some shots in on Layla before rolling her back underneath the bottom rope. Eve gets the roll up on Layla for the win.

Backstage Edge and Chris Jericho are talking about their upcoming tag match against Rey Mysterio and Jeff Hardy

Match 6: (Smackdown Main Event) Edge & Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio and Jeff Hardy

Edge out to the ring first. They show a video of Jeff Hardy choosing the stipulation for their Title match at Extreme Rules. Edge is on the mic talking about how Jeff Hardy can be summed up in two words: Wasted… Opportunity…. Edge berates Hardy about his choice of a Ladder Match and how he has had more success in Ladder Matches than anyone else in WWE history. Says how Jeff manages to make it onto the highlight reel with the things he does with the ladder but that he (Edge) simply WINS! Jericho out next as his pyro explodes and music plays but does not come out to the ring. Rey Mysterio out next as he greets two fans by the security rail wearing Rey Mysterio masks then a 3rd fan who then attacks him, hops over the rail and begins his assault on Mysterio out on the entrance way. The fan pulls off his mask and it’s Chris Jericho! He continues to attack Rey, pulling on his mask (tearing off pieces in the process) before Jeff Hardy runs in to make the save. Mysterio is helped to the back by the officials as this becomes a 2-on-1 handicap match. A valiant effort on the part of Hardy but the double team of Jericho & Edge proves to be too much as Edge connects with the spear on Hardy for the win.
Post match, Edge goes to the outside and brings out a ladder and begins attacking Hardy with it, laying him out on the mat. Edge rolls Hardy between the ladder legs, sandwiching him in there, as Edge forcibly crunches him with the ladder. Edge then poses with his World Heavyweight Title over a lifeless Hardy as that concludes Smackdown.

Dark Match Main Event #2: Jeff Hardy vs. Edge for the WHC inside a steel cage:

Following the conclusion of the 2-on-1 handicap match, Edge tells the fans that they were promised a steel cage match for the World Heavyweight Title. He then demands that the cage be lowered and the match started. Edge attacks Hardy again and gets the pinfall in a match that lasted literally about 5 seconds.

Dark Match Main Event #3: Big Show vs. John Cena inside a steel cage:
Show dominates in the early going however Cena manages to lift Big Show up and over for the Attitude Adjuster for the pinfall.

Post Dark Match stuff:
Justin Roberts is on the mic telling the fans how Big Show played for the “Nuggets” (which gets the Big Show’s attention). Show with the mic in hand asking who said that? Fans point to Roberts who is now hiding behind the timekeeper in the corner. Show then tells the fans why are they booing me? I’ve lost weight, etc and you boo me? Show then plugs his “diet system” and in a serious moment, thanks the fans here at the Staples Center for coming out tonight to the show. As Big Show makes his way back up the ramp, Justin Roberts announces to the crowd that tonight the Big Show has shaved his back just for you, the L.A. crowd, a Khali chant follows….

All told from the first match to the last, this was a 4 hour show and infinitely better than the Monday Night Raw that was held there on Memorial Day! Attendance for this event was less than that of the Monday show with far more sections on the 2nd deck tarped off prior to taping.

  1. Matt Says:

Umaga didn’t win the match. The referee disqualified Umaga after he started whipping Morrison with the strap. So JMor continues to win on Smackdown, thank god.

  2. Scooter Says:

Thanks Matt for the heads Up….
