With “The Slammy Awards – Top 10 Moments? airing Saturday night at 7/6 CT exclusively on WWE.com, a select few of our ever-faithful fans may ask: “What the hell is a Slammy??
Created by the Academy of Wrestling Arts & Sciences in 1986, WWE’s Slammy Award is arguably considered to be sports-entertainment’s version of the Oscar – only bigger. Nomination categories are chosen very carefully, after much deliberation, and Slammys are awarded to the Superstars or Divas most deserving of these golden statues (in most cases, anyway). In the four years that the Slammy Awards were broadcast – 1986, 1987, 1996 and 1997 – categories ranged from “Best Personality,? “Best Performance by an Animal? and “Best Ring Apparel,? to “Manager of the Year,? “Best Buns? and “Most Embarrassing Moment.?
Originally intended as a perfect union of rock-n-wrestling, the Slammy Awards were also a showcase for many of WWE’s in-ring warriors to lend their vocal talents and groove out to some good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll. Our fans may remember one such clip from the 1987 Slammy Awards, when Mr. McMahon performed “Stand Back.? Though the Chairman didn’t win “Song of the Year? – actually, no one did; the Wild Samoan called Sika ate the envelope – it certainly demonstrated just how unique the Slammy Awards truly are.
