This is the 3rd year in a row I have attended the WWE show at the Wildwood Convention Center. The previous 2 years it was a RAW brand show, tonight all 3 brands are featured. The last 2 years WWE stopped here on the way to SummerSlam and the shows were headlined by the RAW championship match from SummerSlam each year. Orton vs Cena in 07, which in my opinion was better than their PPV match and CM Punk vs JBL in 08. The Convention Center is nothing more than a glorified high school gym but it is still a good time. WWE stops in the day before the Night of Champions PPV. Below are results and random observations.
Match 1: Christian vs William Regal. Christian warms the crowd up by trying to find the loudest section to throw his shirt to, he finds it then he points at himself the crowd cheers, then he points at Regal they boo this goes on for a few minutes and then we get underway. Good match that picked up towards the end. The 1st half of the match was used to get the crowd fired up. Christian wins with the sunset flip off the 2nd rope.
The Bella twins are the guests and they ask a family which Wrestlemania tomorrow’s triple threat match headlined, they answered 24, they won front row seats.
Match 2: Drew McIntyre vs Jimmy Wang Yang. Before the match starts Drew goes for some cheap heat by ripping the crowd. He actually had a good line when he said “you tell me I suck, you don’t even know who I am.” which is probably true. Another solid match. Drew gets the win with a double arm DDT.
Match 3: Divas championship Maryse defends against Mickie James. Not much to say here other than you hope they have a better showing tomorrow night. Maryse wins with a DDT.
Match 4: Intercontinental Championship Rey Mysterio defends against Dolph Ziggler. Dolph wants to tell us what his name is, but the crowd boos. He finally gets his first name out but then Rey’s music hits good pop for Rey. Good house show match, should be a good ppv match tomorrow. Rey wins win the 619/ springboard splash. Intermission time as Chimmel sells is on some WWE goods while a couple of kids model it for the crowd.
Match 5: ECW Championship Match Tommy Dreamer defends against Vladimir Koszlov(sp?). Nothing special, Tommy retains with a DDT.
Match 6: CM Punk defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Jeff Hardy. Hardy is without a doubt the #2 guy behind Cena in terms of popularity, hard to believe he hasn’t resigned yet. Punk came out first and even high 5′d fans on his way to the ring, guess the heel turns not complete yet. Hardy gets a big pop. Kind of a short match, but a quality encounter. Punk reverses the twist of fate into the GTS for the win. They should have the match of the night tomorrow.
Match 7: Main Event No DQ match John Cena vs Big Show. Wow, I’m deaf after that explosion for Cena, I just don’t get it. I guess I’m not alone as a very large man in the front row threw their shirt at John Cena. Since the shirt is so big Cena says it it Big Show’s shirt, Show rips it and blows his nose in it. Show doesn’t want to wrestle until the crowd shows him respect. He then says he won’t fight Cena because he is no longer champion and is a loser. Show walks to the back, but Cena reminds him that the billboard out front says he is supposed to whip the Big Show’s ass. Not much of a no DQ match until Show brings in a chair that Cena ends up hitting a DDT and the throwback on. 5 knuckle shuffle, but Show hits the chokeslam, which Cena kicks out of, Cena ends up hitting the FU for the win. If you have seen one Cena/Show match you have seen them all.
All in all a good show, but no Orton no HHH and no Jericho was disappointing. The convention center holds just under 8000 people and was close to sold out. Hot crowd mostly made up of kids on vacation with their families
