WWE Smackdown House Show Results from Honolulu (7/5)

Monday, July 6th, 2009

wwe-smackdown-logo

Match 1:
Shelton Benjamin vs. John Morrison: Solid bout overall, with the crowd totally behind Morrison as a face. Benjamin played the stalling heel a lot, and several “you suck” chants. Morrison gets the win after a Tornado DDT gave way to Starship pain. Crowd extremely hot for the opener.

Tiffany was in the crowd, up in the Cheap seats, and did the bit where she asks a family a question (who won the IC belt last week at the PPV) and then upgraded them to ringside. She’s very pretty in person, and the crowd was into this segment.

Match 2:
Evan Bourne vs. Mark Henry: Typical of their recent TV matches. Crowd was into the spots here, cheering Henry when he was on offense and Bourne when he was flying. Henry gets the win with the “World’s Strongest Slam” and Bourne got a cheer when he limped out. Nothing unexpected here.

Match 3:
Dolph Ziggler vs. The Great Khali: Ziggler came out and did some mic work, “I’m going to leave if you don’t cheer me” sort of stuff, until Khali’s music hit, and the crowd went berserk. Yes. For Khali. When he came out, the place exploded, and he did a few “Shaka’s” (hang loose hand gesture) and the crowd popped for that. He did the “double fist arm raise of doom” to each side of the ring, and the place simply went bananas, chanting “Khali” for the first of several times. Khali got the win after a powerbomb that looked very stiff, and the match was basically what we’ve seen on TV, just less entertaining. The story here was Khali was over huge with the Hawaiian crowd. The guy next to me said, “Man, we don’t see guys that big here…”

Match 4:
Jeff Hardy vs. CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship: Jeff’s pop was huge. Punk’s was mixed. They did some silliness before the match. The match was unremarkable overall, with Punk getting the clean pin after Punk caught Jeff after Jeff countered the GTS. Several “Hardy” chants, and a few “CM Punk” chants as well.

After some kids threw T-Shirts to the crowd, we went to intermission.

Match 5:

Melina/Gail Kim vs. Michelle McCool/Alicia Fox: They gave this a decent amount of time, as people were coming back from the break. Melina looked very sharp, and was way over with the crowd. Gail still looks a step behind where she was in TNA in my opinion, but snapped off a very nice Hurricanrana which Alicia Fox took pretty well. Fox is still green as a grass skirt, but she’s clearly improving and working hard. McCool was fine. Match overall was pretty stiff with Gail Kim getting the pin off Fox after a top rop body press.

At this time, they told us that “12 Rounds” is available on DVD.

Match 6:
Christian vs. Jack Swagger vs. Tommy Dreamer for the ECW Title. Christian got a huge pop coming out. Swagger got booed, and Tommy got a nice reaction. Tommy looks very trim in person. If you had told me 10 years ago that I’d see Tommy Dreamer walk into Honolulu defending the ECW title in 2009, complete with a “We want tables” chant, I’d have wondered what you were smoking…but I digress. Match was ok, with the guys talking turns selling a beating on the outside of the ring so it could be a 1-on-1 match most of the way. Swagger gave the Blue thunder Bomb to Christian and then promptly got caught in a DDT by Tommy, who pinned Swagger for the win. Tommy is clearly having the time of his life, and seemed very moved by the pop he got for the win and the ECW chants. Swagger was a heat magnet as he left the ring.

Match 7: Main Event

Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio, for the IC Title:
featuring “Hawaii’s own favorite son” Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat as guest referee.

Jericho came out first to monster boos. He took a mic, and ran down his credentials, and chided us for being “Pineapple eaters” among other things. Segment of the night–a ringside fan had a sign that read “Jericho is Mahu,” which he saw and made mention of, saying among other things, “Well, if Mahu means that I am the best in the World at what I do, than I am %100 MAHU!” leading to a huge “Mahu” chants. Whether Jericho knew that “Mahu” is the Hawaiian word for “Transgendered” is at this time unknown. Led to a fun new chant for the crowd, which they repeated all match.

Rey came out to a pop that was probably the loudest of the night until Ricky Steamboat came out.

Match was good-pretty on target for the matches they’ve had on TV. Jericho worked the mask, and at one point, it legitimately came off, and Ricky and Jericho hammed it up in the ring while Rey fixed it on the floor. Match eventually ended when, after several attempts, Rey hit the 619 on Jericho, who was distracted by Ricky taking away a chair that Jericho had tried to use. West coast pop, and Rey retains.

After Rey leaves, Jericho attacks Steamboat, and beats him down. Ricky makes the comeback with a series of chops, and Jericho runs off, leaving Ricky to bask in the Aloha of the crowd.

Fun show overall-no attendance announced, but I would say the place was 85-90% full, and the crowd was hot all night.

Top Face Pops:
1) Ricky Steamboat
2) Rey
3) Hardy
4) Khali (yes, really)
5) Christian/Morrison

Top Heel Heat:
1) Jericho
2) Swagger
3) Ziggler
4) Shelton Benjamin
5) McCool/Fox

Smackdown/ECW House Show Results in San Diego, California (7/3/09)

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

smackdown-ecw-logo

Wrestling News World reader David Mayorga sent in the following report:

Match 1: Evan Bourne vs Shelton Benjamin

Shelton dominates in the early going before Bourne with some key counters and reversals. Hits the Shooting Star Press on Shelton for the win.

Match 2: Drew McIntyre vs Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat

Loud pop for Steamboat as he made his way to the ring. McIntyre avoids Steamboat in the early parts of the match, constantly leaving the ring or getting in between the ring ropes to delay the match. McIntyre even gets into a shouting match with some fans at ringside. McIntyre works over Steamboat with various holds throughout the match. Steamboat hits a top rope splash on McIntyre for the win.

Match 3: Dolph Ziggler vs. The Great Khali

Before the match started, Ziggler had the hardest time swatting his own wad of gum away. Tried exactly 4 times before declaring *FAIL* on his part and just tossing it towards ringside.

Match quickly spills to the outside where Ziggler gets in a few blows but Khali takes control and sends Ziggler back into the ring. A few moments later and a Khali Bomb on Ziggler gives The Great Khali the win.

Match 4: Mark Henry vs Christian vs Jack Swagger vs Tommy Dreamer in a Fatal 4-way for the ECW Championship

As Jack Swagger enters the ring, he climbs the top turnbuckle and holds up a Christian t-shirt that he tears up and tosses away. Some 2-on-1 parts in the match as well as some 1-on-1 wrestling, including a superplex powerbomb combo on Christian & Swagger by Mark Henry. Swagger hits the gut-wrench powerbomb on Christian but the 3 count was broken up by Dreamer who hits the DDT on Swagger for the win & retains his ECW Championship.

Match 5: Edge vs. Jeff Hardy

Edge out to the ring first followed by Hardy to a loud pop. Shortly after the match begins, Edge leaves the ring to stall and annoy the fans. He reenters and they lock up, Edge whipping Hardy but reverses sending Edge into the turnbuckle. Edge climbs to the middle turnbuckle when his left leg twisted unexpectedly and fell down onto the mat. Referees and medical staff enter the ring to check on Edge. Justin Roberts announces to the crowd that Edge is unable to continue and Jeff Hardy wins by forfeit!

Post-match: Edge is being helped out of the ring by trainers and staff. He grabs the mic and tells the crowd “Sorry” before being helped away to the back.

***INTERMISSION***

Match 6: Michelle McCool & Alicia Fox vs. Melina & Gail Kim with Maria as the special guest referee

Nothing particularly special about this match. Great to see Melina and Gail Kim teaming together as they get the win over McCool and Fox.

Match 7: Chris Jericho vs. John Morrison

Before the match, Jericho opens a promo about how we are not deserving of the level of talent that you see in the ring right now. He continues to run down the fans and mentioning his 9x Intercontinental Championship reigns, his 5x World Championship reigns, etc, etc.

A few minutes into the match, Morrison grabs a “You Suck” sign from a fan and climbs to the top turnbuckle and holds it out for everyone to chant right at Jericho! Good match between both with mat wrestling and high flying moves mixed in. Jericho uses the ring ropes for leverage behind the ref’s back as he gets the win over Morrison (and quickly escapes to the back).

Main Event: Rey Mysterio vs. World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk in a Champion vs Champion match for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Punk makes his way to the ring with more cheers than boos tonight. Mysterio gets the absolute loudest pop of the night as he enters the ring holding the Intercontential Title. Back and forth throughout the match as the action goes to the outside a few times then back inside the ring. Mysterio narrowly avoids the GTS before delivering a stiff kick to Punk’s head as he falls onto the middle rope. Mysterio connects with the 619 on Punk and connects with Droppin Da Dime as he goes for the cover but is interrupted by Jericho as he begins stomping away on Mysterio. Not for long though as Hardy quickly dashes to the ring to assist Rey. Hardy and Mysterio whip Punk and Jericho as they collide and knock heads. Both fall onto the middle rope as Rey hits a double 619 on Punk and Jericho. Hardy with the swanton on Jericho and then Rey with another droppin da dime on Punk to send the crowd home happy.

After the match, Rey is on the mic telling everyone thank you for coming out tonight. I love you San Diego & Viva La Raza! He then high-fives fans at ringside, does some autographs and pictures as well. His wife and kids were in attendence as they were front row ringside (two rows directly behind me).

As far as house shows go, this was a fairly solid event in my opinion. Will be very interesting to see if Edge was legitimately hurt or if this was a way to get him some rest before their upcoming overseas tour.

Complete 15 Star Trade Between Rosters: Raw, Smackdown and ECW

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The following is from WWE.com:

15-star-trade

Donald Trump’s brief tenure as the owner of Raw may have ended, but his actions taken at that time continue to reverberate throughout the WWE landscape.

On Monday’s episode of Raw, the WWE Universe learned that, before selling Raw back to Mr. McMahon, “The Donald” had orchestrated more than a dozen Superstar trades, extending through all three WWE brands and including the following:

Moving to the Raw roster:
Gail Kim
Alicia Fox
Jack Swagger
Evan Bourne
Mark Henry

Moving to the SmackDown roster:
Matt Hardy
Finlay
The Hart Dynasty - David Hart Smith, Tyson Kidd & Natalya

Moving to the ECW roster:
Shelton Benjamin
Goldust
William Regal
Brie & Nikki Bella

The man who prides himself on having mastered the “art of the deal” has made a career out of getting the last laugh in the business world. And now the same can be said of Trump’s interactions with Mr. McMahon, the fellow billionaire who so publicly fired him. After all, Trump not only slapped The Chairman after the firing, he also walked away with twice the amount he had paid for Raw upon selling it back to Mr. McMahon. And now, a full week after his departure, the effects of Trump’s tenure are just now bubbling to the surface.

Could there be more earth-shaking revelations in store? We can’t be certain, but stay tuned!

Brisco Update, This Weeks Smackdown, SD at The Bash, Y2J/Goldberg Altercation and MORE

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Jim Ross has posted on his JRSBarBQ website. here are a few snippets from his entry:

Brisco update:Gerald Brisco is feeling much better and after a “false start” regarding his lab work looks as if he will have his “valve job” for his ticker next week. In order words, Jerry Brisco is scheduled, as I write this, to have the small hole in his heart and the faulty heart valve repaired in Tampa next week. Jerry seems to have made a positive turn from the affects of his multiple strokes. The Brisco’s are tough and have always been winners and I can feel Jerry attacking this matter with the competitive edge with which he was born. Recovery time for all the native Okie’s health issues will likely be a couple of months, maybe a little more, but what some folks wouldn’t give to have a couple of months off and get away from the challenging, weekly travel schedule.

smackdwn-preview-6-26-09

-This Week’s Smackdown:This week’s Friday Night Smackdown show is a really solid, two hour effort with lots of wrestling and some extremely entertaining interaction between Mr. McMahon and Theodore Long. You can judge for yourself Friday night but I think you will agree that the SD team created an awareness for The Bash PPV which it needed. With so many PPV’s makes it challenging to give all of them the time and TLC that they need to fully engage the consumer in buying them. I think that this Sunday’s PPV has a chance to be really good especially if the match times allow for compelling stories to be told.

-Smackdown at The Bash:SD has four bouts at The Bash which also includes Melina defending the WWE Women’s Title against Michelle McCool, this one will be physical if my instincts are accurate, and the Ziggler vs. Khali bout which might surprise us. I’m not saying it will be Brisco-Funk or HHH-HBK but still, Dick, I mean Dolph Ziggler vs. The Great Khali might offer a surprise. Or not.

-Y2J/Goldberg Altercation:Chris Jericho was telling the story in Milwaukee Tuesday night of the locker room altercation he had with Goldberg on Goldberg’s first night in WWE. I saw the incident and it was essentially over in the blink of an eye as Jericho grabbed a tight, front face lock on his larger adversary and then the mêlée was broken up. Jericho smiled when remembering that moment and many of the young guys seemed to enjoy hearing the story.

Wrestling News World reader Tom Skulley sent in the following report:

At least 3,500 in attendance which is a good crowd for this area.

Opening Match— R Truth defeated Shelton Benjamin with his spinning finisher. Not a bad opening bout as R Truth had the Whats Up chant going. This guy needs a push.

Second Match — Finlay defeated Drew McIntyre, a local guy, with the celtic cross. Finlay had the shilleleigh but was not used in the match.

Third Match — The Great Khali def. Dolph Ziggler. Khali received a nice pop from the crowd and had a smile most of the match. He works much better as a face.

Fourth Match — Hart Dynasty w/Natalya def Crime Tyme. Nice back and forth tag match. Sitting in the front row Natala was 3 ft away from me the entire match. Looks like HD and her and still honing their craft and are getting better. Nice addition to the ECW roster.

Fifth Match —- ECW Championship Tommy Dreamer def Christian. Love Dreamer and started many E-C Dub chants! However Tommy is so slow in the ring. Christian carried the match even though they did have a nice sequence toward the end where they reversed several moves. Dreamer won with the DDT and the two shook hands after the match.

Intermission — 2 kids came in the ring with Justin Roberts and threw out some T shirts and Jeff Hardy arm bands to the crowd.

Sixth Match — Divas six women tag. Special guest referee Maria. Melina, Gail Kim, and Eve def Natalya, Alicia Fox, and Layla. Nice to see them send 7 divas to a house show. The Divas division has really improved over the past year or two and nice to see them get some work. Melina pinned Alicia Fox with her finisher.

Seventh Match — Intercontinental Championship Chris Jericho vs John Morrison. Two really good workers here and not a bad match. Morrison was able to get out of the walls of Jericho. Jericho got some good heat by berating the crowd before the match. Jericho won unfairly with his hands on the ropes. I Would have preferred a clean finish.

Main Event — Triple threat for the World Heavyweight Championship Edge vs Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk Edge traded ribs with one of the ringsiders which was entertaining. Only downside to this (with any triple threat) is most of the match there were only 2 guys in the ring with the other outside. Jeff Hardy hit the swanton on Edge then CM Punk gave Jeff Hardy the GTS for the win.

Really good house show. Was pleasantly surprised just about all the top guys there. First time Smackdown/ECW had been to town in a few years.

Biggest Pop

The Great Khali
Jeff Hardy
Cryme Tyme
Finlay
CM Punk

Biggest Heat
