JR Talks about Tonight’s Raw Show, Coachman, JBL and OVW and More

Monday, March 9th, 2009

jimrosspicture.jpgJim Ross has posted on his personal blog, JRSBarBQ.com. Here is what JR Wrote:

-WWE Monday Night Raw is in Jacksonville, Florida tonight for their weekly, live broadcast which should continue to build on the stories leading to WM25. I expect tonight’s show to really get fans talking and I look forward to watching it like any other fan from the comfort of my easy chair. Because we will be following the primary Raw issues closely on Friday Night SmackDown, I will be be playing particular attention to the HHH-Orton saga not to mention any activity involving HBK and the Undertaker. Interesting development evolving here as it relates to the announcers as these are both multi-branded bouts and I will be curious to see what voices get the nod for these bouts at WM25. Nonetheless Monday Night Raw should be particularly interesting tonight from Jacksonville. When I think of Jacksonville, I always think of the late Don Curtis who was a great wrestling star in his time and ended up being the promoter of Jacksonville for Eddie Graham’s Florida Championship Wrestling. Don and Mark Lewin were a superb tag team once upon a time and Don found success in singles competition in Florida later in is career. I just saw a live event bout with a one camera shoot from Jacksonville recently on WWE 24/7 between Ernie Ladd and Dusty Rhodes where “The Big Cat” won “The Dream’s” Florida Heavyweight Title. Don was a native of Buffalo, New York which has quite the old school wrestling heritage plus that is where Beth Phoenix is from.

-Talks about Jonathon Coachman: Former WWE broadcaster Jonathan Coachman seems to be on the cusp of leaving ESPN News full time and moving on to addition ESPN gigs such as NBA Tonight and hosting SportsCenter. Coach is really happy at ESPN and finds it less challenging than working at WWE. The last time that I spoke with him he sounded like a different man but having a new baby girl can attribute to that too.

JBL sponsoring OVW: I read on the internet where JBL has purchased an interest in Danny Davis’ OVW operation. If one assumes that WWE can’t efficiently train all the young prospects that they would ideally like in only one facility, then one could also assume that other training grounds might be able to take up the slack and eventually “graduate” their students one step closer to WWE fame and fortune…..for a nominal fee of course. No one can ever say that JBL isn’t big picture thinking, multi-tasker. JBL’s business deal with OVW intrigues me. Training wrestlers is tough and having too many “students” in the “class room” sometimes becomes a challenge that cannot be overcome. With that said, I think based on what I have personally seen that the WWE facility in Tampa is ideal but, again, they can only train so many athletes at a time and do it correctly. JBL Clears OVW Business

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

jbl1JBL has posted the following on WWE Universe, saying that he is mainly sponsoring OVW and not buying the company.

He is what he wrote:

I want to be clear about OVW, Danny Davis is the owner-I am not buying OVW nor any interest in OVW. Layfield Energy is merely taking over as his main sponsor and advertiser. I see an opportunity to advertise our products and grow our distribution in Kentucky.

I wouldn’t have done this if it weren’t for Danny, but I think it is a good marketing vehicle for Layfield Energy. So I want to be clear, I am not in the wrestling business other than as a sponsor and that money will be able to keep OVW going on TV-which I am very happy and proud to do.

WWE Superstar FUNDS Ohio Valley Wrestling, Jake “The Snake” Update

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

-WWE superstar JBL has posted on the WWE Universe Website. JBL tell that is he solely funding Ohio Valley Wrestling. He believes in OVW and the dream that exists there. Here is what JBL posted:

I am the sponsor of OVW, it is true. Danny Davis is my good friend and I hate to see anyone lose their jbl1dream. Danny has mortgaged his home to make this work; I mortgaged my home for Layfield Energy. I understand passion, I understand love. I believe in the American spirit, I believe that if you want to achieve, you can.

My company is doing well, and I can promise you I don’t take one account or one customer for granted. I am going to sponsor what Danny is doing. It will be much more than just wrestling. Trust me; we are going to do some really cool things. This will unfold in the next few months, I have big plans for what we are doing.

But for now, I am funding all of OVW, because I believe in what they are doing. One day I will tell all, but for now, I will say that I am doing what is right.

I started in places like OVW; these places have to be protected. These places are sacred, and I don’t do this for nostalgia, I do it as a business decision. This is not just my BS plan to give back; I have a plan-believe me.

By the way, can I tell you-Wrestlemania, I am doing something historic. Write this down, put it in stone; I am doing something that will shock the world of wrestling. I am doing something that will change the WWE forever. Mark my words.

New Talents from OVW are WWE Develpomentals

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

-Ohio Valley Wrestling has issued this press release awhile back stating on hiring new talents to WWE’s developmental program:

As a direct result of Senior Vice President of Talent Relations for WWE {NYSE:WWE} John Laurinaitis’ visit to Ohio Valley Wrestling on September 22nd, OVW is proud to announce the signing of four wrestlers to WWE’s developmental program.

Laurinaitis, who is in charge of hiring and recruiting all WWE talent, paid a visit to Ohio Valley Wrestling in September to evaluate and scout OVW’s roster for potential WWE Superstars.

After the tryout and evaluation session, four OVW wrestlers were awarded developmental contracts. Those four are former OVW Heavyweight and Southern Tag Team Champion Chris Cage, former OVW Heavyweight Champion Ryback, Former DCW Champion Gavin Garrison, and Brian Jossie. Due to the training these four have received while at OVW and the potential that they show, these wrestlers have shown that OVW remains one of the premiere training grounds for professional wrestling and sports entertainment today.

Matt Martlaro, OVW’s Live Event Coordinator, as well as a television producer/director for OVW, was also signed to WWE’s developmental program. Due to the experience Martlaro received behind the scenes in television production from some of the best minds in the professional wrestling business (including Danny Davis, Al Snow, Rip Rogers, Jim Cornette, Paul Heyman and more), he has been awarded a developmental contract as well.

With these signings, OVW remains one of the only places in the world where a true education in the professional wrestling and Sports Entertainment can be realized. AS OVW continues to develop talent, and WWE continues to recruit OVW, the path to a career in Sports Entertainment leads right through the doors of Davis Arena. OVW now proves that it not only offers opportunities for success inside the ring, but behind the scenes as well.

With these five signings, OVW’s list of alumni only grows larger. OVW’s record for success remains unmatched, with over 120 OVW developed performers going on to WWE over the past decade. This does not include the many other OVW alumni who have made names for themselves all over the world due to the training they received at the Davis Arena.

OVW runs an intense, weekly schedule, combining the physicality of our Beginners and Advanced classes, the frenetic, hectic pace of our TV tapings, and the unique experience of our weekend Live Events in the tri-state area. In addition to that, opportunities exist at nearly every level of the professional wrestling business, from refereeing to camera operator, to working on interviews and other on-camera skills; OVW offers a truly immersive training experience.

OVW will continue to supply the future of WWE, and professional wrestling as a whole, with talent that is trained at a level which can be achieved nowhere else in the world. John Laurinaitis put it best when he expressed that OVW is still the place to be if you desire an education in the art and the sport of professional wrestling.

WWE Scouts Former WWE Territory

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Back in February of this year, WWE announced that they have serevered ties with OVW. Now with talent running up and Up WWE send out Sr. VP of Talent Relations for WWE John Laurinaitis to do a little scouting. Here are the deatials on his visit to OVW.

OVW Press release:

The Sr. VP of Talent Relations for WWE John Laurinaitis, who is in charge of hiring and recruiting all WWE talent, paid a visit to Ohio Valley Wrestling this week to evaluate and scout OVW’s roster for potential WWE Superstars.

After an intensive tryout session, John Laurinaitis talked with OVW talent at length concerning various subjects. First and foremost, WWE still has a healthy, active relationship with OVW. WWE has not forgotten both the quantity and quality of stars who earned their way to the top by first passing through the doors of Davis Arena, and Laurinaitis expressed that he believed that OVW is still one of the premiere places in the world in which to receive an education in professional wrestling.

Secondly, WWE will be taking a much more active role in recruiting OVW developed talent. Officials from WWE will be paying a visit to Louisville , KY on a regular basis to evaluate and recruit talent from OVW’s roster. This, combined with OVW’s unique approach to training and development of talent will provide anyone who is looking to make a name for themselves unlimited opportunities to succeed.
