tank

Courtesy of Brian Tramel of Rasslin Riot Online:

-The phone has been ringing like crazy the last hour and it has been confirmed by the Pemiscot County Police Department, Tank died earlier today. Apparently he was sitting in a county office when he started to feel weird and thought maybe he had been stung by a bee. He told them he was highly allergic and they rushed him to Dr. Barnard’s office in Caruthersville, MO. He had stopped breathing and they could not get a tube in his throat or help revive him after that. Our condolences to the family. I will have update as soon as I find out arrangements.

UPDATE:

-I just got off the phone with Tank’s wife Helen. She said that as they were sitting in the welfare office yesterday Tank’s eye started to swell. He went out to the car to get some Benadryl. He then told her that they needed to go to the doctor’s office because he felt like he could not breath. Tank drove himself to the doctor’s office and Helen believes that Tank died at the office before the 911 ambulance arrived. Helen says she does not think it was a bee sting, as Tank had said nothing to her about being stung. The coroner and doctor’s office are telling her that the official cause of death is a heart attack. Apparently area worker Ricky Andrews had arrived at the doctor’s office before the 991 ambulance had arrived.

—-Helen is making arrangements at 9:00 AM this morning and I plan to talk to her again later today. I will keep everyone update. Tank leaves behind his wife Helen, his daughter Teela and step-daughter Kayla. Please keep them in your thoughts!!!

Another Update:

—-Visitation will be held Monday at John W German Funeral Home in Hayti, MO from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM with services following that. Below is the address. If anyone would be interested in making donations towards helping the family pay expenses, please contact the funeral home. Anyone else have any ideas about benefits and such, please contact me. I am willing to help out as much as I can. Tank did not have insurance and this would be a great time for us all to pull together and try to help them out!!

WWE Changes Last PPV Name, Keibler Update, POSSIBLE Judgment Day SPOILER

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

-PWInsider reports Comcast employees were notified on Friday via email that they were to update their marketing materials to reflect a name change for WWE’s June Pay-per-view, The Great American Bash. The new name? The Bash.

stacykeibler_calvinborel
(Harold Roth/Horsesphotos.com/NTRA)

-Former WWE Diva Stacy Keibler was spotted with Kentucky Derby winner Kentucky Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel at Pimlico Race Course hours before he won the race.

*WARNING*
- The following article contains possible spoilers for Sunday’s WWE Judgment Day PPV.

There is a good chance that Chris Jericho will be winning the Intercontinental championship at the WWE Judgment Day pay-per view this weekend.

As we reported previously, Jericho personally requested a lengthy feud with Mysterio, and the storyline idea is to have Mysterio possibly lose his mask on TV (or at least tease it).

With that known, it makes sense that Jericho would win the I-C title on Sunday, with the angle going forward being Mysterio putting his mask on the line for a rematch with Jericho.

Lilian Garcia, Styles “Glimpse” into the Future

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

lilian-1
-Monday Night Raw SEXY ring announcer Lilian Garcia has posted answers to a few questions from her fans on WWE Universe website. {Questions for Lilian}

-Joey Styles has posted his former thoughts that just came to him on WWE Universe, as he remembers what he wrote years before not knowing it came true:

As the entire world moves to broadband over the next five years and streaming online video is full screen and TV quality, what if WWE did not need to air their programming anywhere but WWE.com? What if pay-per-views were only available online where WWE keeps 100% of the revenue vs. TV pay-per-view which allows WWE, TNA, UFC, etc. to keep only 40% of the revenue?

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

bobbylashleywwe

An video has surfaced online of Bobby Lashley vs. Mike Cook. This is Lashley’s third fight, making him undefeated at 3-0.

Cook appeared to be taunting Lashley as he made his entrance wearing a Rey Mysterio mask. In an post match interview Bobby Lashley has this to say:

“I’m here for business,” Lashley said. “Everybody comes out here and tries to make fun of the wrestling thing.”

“I’m real and I’m coming out here to fight. They can come out here and play around. If they play around I am going to knock them out or choke them out. And that’s exactly what I did tonight. I choked him out.

“Now he can go put back on the mask and have fun with himself.”

Lashley next fight is with MMA veteran Bob Sapp on June 27 in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Mysterio Injured?!!, Mexico Tour, Hulk Drama, The Rock and Mom at White House and More

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Jim Ross has posted the following updates on his website:

rey-mysterio-_smackdown-Mysterio gets banged up:
Rey Mysterio got banged up by a very physical Shelton Benjamin in a match that will air Thursday night on WGN America on WWE Superstars. Benjamin has been much more aggressive lately, as is his long time friend Charlie Haas, and Benjamin’s aggression banged up the IC Champion to the level that Rey was unable to make much of an impact on Friday Night Smackdown but somehow the incredible Mysterio does manage to put his unique stamp on Friday night’s show.

Mysterio’s injury, which occurred just moments before we were to start the SD taping, caused Friday Night Smackdown to really have a spontaneous, exciting feel which I think will come across clearly on the MyNetworkTV presentation. It was an especially exciting night for Todd Grisham and me at ringside. I know that when I returned to the Dayton Marriott I was beat like a government mule but not in a bad way. We left it all out there as you will hopefully see Friday night. I was so beat that I by passed any opportunity for a “night cap.”

-JR talks about the Mexico tour being back on: The WWE tour of Mexico is back on as many of you know and all 4 events are essentially sold out. Monterrey and Mexico City are “clean” and will gross over $1.7M between the three events and Queretaro is “this close” to being totally sold out too. This will be a lucrative tour for WWE as they continue to strengthen their brand in Mexico which has one of the richest, longest, wrestling heritages in the world.

-Hulk Drama: Is any one else getting really tired of the drama that Hulk’ s apparent, soon to be ex-wife continues to create? Divorces are generally not a cool thing with which to deal, I know as I am a veteran of such domestic skirmishes, but this one has taken on a life of its own and the lawyers are laughing all the way to the bank. Linda Hogan hiring TWO body guards to “protect” her from Hulk is damn near laughable and it would be if it weren’t so pathetic.

-The Rock at The White House with His MOM:
Former WWE superstar, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, was not only at a star studded function at the White House last weekend but he also received the opportunity to take his Mom to the White House on Mother’s Day for a private tour. Now that, my friends, is a cool Mother’s Day. My late Mama would have loved that experience. Good for Dwayne. First class all the way. Read the complete blog, here.

WWE Cyber Sunday 2009 Location/Date, JR Comments on Batista’s Retirement, Criticizes Jarrett’s DVD

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

– WWE Cyber Sunday pay-per-view will take place on Oct. 25 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

-Jim Ross comments on Batista’s retiring comments: Been reading where Batista “may retire” in a year or so but I’d bet that won’t happen. Unless Batista has saved a boat load of cash I say he stays in WWE and makes more of those big pay days and 7 figure years. Big Dave likes the good life, who doesn’t, but the “good life” isn’t facilitated w/ coupons. Dave’s value to WWE, considering especially the overall lack of main event depth may never be greater. I know I throughly enjoy my paychecks even thought I feel I’m underpaid ( who doesn’t?)and hope to successfully negotiate a new contract w/ WWE when the time comes later in 2009. Hey, we ALL feel like we’re under paid, right?

jarrettcover-Jim Ross has posted his thoughts on TNA Wrestling founder Jeff Jarrett’s new dvd “King of the Mountain”: “Read a review of the new Jeff Jarrett DVD. I’m sure it’s good but some folk’s recollection of history never ceases to amaze me. Jeff remembers things differently than I but it is his DVD produced by his company about him so he’s certainly not going to make himself look bad. Who would? Lots of water has gone under the bridge since those days and it certainly isn’t a major issue one way or the other and perhaps I’ll tell my side of the negotiations in question some day. I would suggest that all involved might have had dirty hands in that matter but I can assure you that I didn’t break my word in dealing with Double J. My old job back in the day was challenging and every decision wasn’t easy. Such is life. No regrets.

Facts About “The Wrestler” on DVD, YOU Never Knew

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

the_wrestler_1

Here are some interesting facts to think about when you are watching “The Wrestler” on DVD.

THESE FACTS WILL GIVE AWAY PLOT POINTS FROM THE FILM

Lex Luger IS Randy the Ram. The film opens with a montage of clippings and photos from the heyday of Randy The Ram’s sparkling pro wrestling career before jumping ahead 20 years later to find him the beaten, weathered performer he is today. All of the photos in the montage and other scenes in the film are actually doctored photos of former WCW World champion Lex Luger, acquired by the film from photographer George Napolitano, who has been shooting ringside for decades at major events. When Producers learned of the path Luger’s life took in the years after WCW shut down, the decision to use him as a body model for the Ram made even more sense. Luger was later brought out to the film’s Hollywood premiere.

How Would Those Hair Extensions Have Worked? Although the story that seems to get told is that director Darren Aronofsky listened to his heart and replaced Nicolas Cage with Mickey Rourke, the reality appears to be something different. Cage actually trained for several days under Afa the Wild Samoan in Allentown, PA. Afa later got word that Cage had departed the project and had to wait for Rourke to come on board, leaving Rourke a scant three months to pick up the physicality of the business. Watching Rourke in the film, one can’t help but wonder how it would have worked with Cage in the role…and whether he would have been anywhere near the Oscars race. Afa was actually suggested by Georgianne Makropoulos of The Wrestling Chatterbox. Rourke still texts Afa daily. Cage, who likely left the project due to the physicality needed, probably doesn’t stay in touch.

Originally, She Came To Him. In a scene that was later cut from the film (and probably never filmed), Randy the Ram’s daughter Stephanie comes to see him backstage at a show he is wrestling on. In the scene, she is the one who has come to “make amends” as part of her AA program. Ram is half-interested and when fans interrupt their discussion, she comments, “I’m in the middle of something important and you drop it for f***ing wrestling.” Randy then accuses her of showing up to attack him, ending the would-be reunion. Given the level of work from Rourke and Evan Rachel Wood in the film, it would have been interesting to see how the scene may have played out on screen - it also would have shown the effect of Ram’s career on his daughter’s emotional health beyond her anger over his decision to make his career the most important thing in his life.

As Jon Lovitz once said, “ACTING!” While the story of the film does not stray from Robert Siegel’s script, all of the backstage locker room scenes and the first scene where Randy the Ram works a deli counter were all improvised. In fact, Rourke was serving legitimate customers in that first scene, making his quips to those getting food that much funnier.

Yes, That is the ECW Arena. Although most fans wouldn’t realize it watching the film, the Combat Zone Wrestling sequence where Randy wrestles Necro Butcher and later suffers his health scare is the former ECW Arena in Philadelphia. The locker room scene where Ram passes out backstage in the venue is actually backstage at the Arena as well, one of the upgrades that have been done on the building since the original ECW collapsed. It was perhaps five feet from where Paul Heyman gave the famous speech in the “Beyond the Mat” documentary. Of the other independent venues shown in the film, only the ROH show in Dover was a venue that was used specifically by the production with ROH working with the producers to fill the theater booked. The WXW and JAPW sequences were filmed at actual events promoted in venues regularly used by those companies.

Who You Should Thank. In the convention scene, where Randy the Ram is among the stars of yesteryear who sit around waiting to meet a small public, he meets a fan named Evan. In actuality, that fan is longtime Wrestling Then & Now newsletter editor Evan Ginzberg, listed as Associate Producer of the film. Ginzberg handled a lot of the groundwork for Ring of Honor, Jersey All Pro Wrestling and other independent companies to get involved. If you were happy to see this aspect of the business recognized and even happier to see some local talents get a payday, Evan was the person responsible. He also pops up in the crowd of the first wrestling scene. Ginzberg is now working a documentary about his friend Tiger Khan an independent wrestler who is among those that passed away far too young. The themes of that film will have similar ones to “The Wrestler”, except none of it will have been fantasy.

Perhaps it was Russo’s Booking? In the same scene, while most fans may not recognize him, the veteran that hugs Randy the Ram and is later seen dead asleep waiting for fans that will never come is none other than WWE Hall of Famer and former Tag Team champion Johnny Valiant. Yes, really.

The Ram’s Other Trainers. While Afa the Wild Samoan oversaw Rourke’s training, it was WXW wrestlers Supreme Lee Great and Tommy Suede who worked inside the ring with Rourke to prepare him for the film. Great appears in the film as a referee while Suede wrestles Rourke in the first match as Tommy Noxious.

Mom, Dad, For The Last Time, Just Do What I Tell You. In the second deli scene, in which Randy the Ram’s worked and real worlds come colliding together, Darren Aronofsky’s own parents make cameos as the annoying customers that set the stage for Randy’s rage and retreat from the supermarket.

Rourke Really Did Wrestle…Sort Of. While the mainstream media has been fascinated by the fact that Mickey Rourke performed all his own stunts for the film, that is and isn’t true. Kid USA, a New York area based independent wrestler from the early 1990s, worked as Rourke’s stand-in, as they had a similar build and hairstyle. In many cases, when the matches were filmed, they were shot twice. Once with USA, once with Rourke. The final product in the film is likely the edited sum of those bouts. Rourke really did pull out the flying head scissors and dive over the ropes that you see in the climactic match of the film against The Ayatollah, however.

Hey Ram, You Suck! When Randy the Ram gives his speech prior to the match that closes the film, the audience is in love with their hero and gives him a huge standing ovation. The reality was that when they first attempted to film the scene, the ROH audience began catcalling the monolouge. It wasn’t until Darren Aronofsky addressed the audience and explained how important the scene was that they got on board, giving themselves a “We f***ed up” chant before setting into the rabid Ram-Lovefest you see in the final film.

If You Are A Hardcore Fan, Sit Through The Credits. A number of people who worked in and around the wrestling industry were thanked by the production, but you have to wait to the end to see their acknowledgments, including Brutus Beefcake, Greg Valentine, Sabu and Gabe Sapolsky.

The Ending You Didn’t See.
The Wrestler ends with Randy coming off the top rope with the Ram Jam before going to black and playing Bruce Springsteen’s haunting song for the credits. When the match was filmed at a March 2008 ROH event, Ram nailed the move and scored the pin….not that the pinfall truly mattered, as the character had sacrificed everything he tried to regain by returning to the wrestling world.

The Wrestler is an extremely fascinating character study of a performer who is also a walking time capsule, lost mentally and emotionally in what he used to be, with no idea how to grow and accept who he is today. It’s a film well worth seeing.

Update on Mike Adamle “Slap Me Harder”

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

mikeadamle_1

This week’s episode of the Big Ten Quad with Eddie George featured former Northwestern and NFL running back Mike Adamle as part of a three-person panel. With the show featuring three former or current Northwestern University backs, most of the discussion was about college football and the NFL.

In a segment where they talked about “what keeps them up at night”, Mike talked about the difference between fear and anxiety, and how no true top athlete had fear.

Host Eddie George then turned that discussion toward Mike’s “current job” with WWE. He asked is it an illusion. Mike said he tells people to not use the “f word”, fake. They are all tremendous athletes, and while the events are choreographed, the action is the real deal.

Adamle said he’s done a lot of things in his career, but he’d love to get into the ring and see what it’s like to be chokeslammed by a 7-foot wrestler. Eddie brought up that he did hit someone, which Mike confirmed from when he slapped Randy Orton, but he was then written off the show, and was waiting to get written back in.

Eddie then asks Mike to slap him, which he does, shocking the host when he felt how hard it actually is. Mike then asked him to return the favor, although the slaps were weak, and Mike kept saying “harder!”
