Funk’s Corner - Three wrestlers who have trained in the Dory Funk Method of Professional Wrestling appeared on WWE’s Night of Champions last night and all three came out victorious. Here at the Funking Conservatory Wrestling School we are proud of the accomplishments of Christian (ECW Champion), Mickie James (Diva’s Champion) and in the last match on the card, Jeff Hardy (World Heavyweight Champion) winning in a classic match against C. M. Punk.

New on !BANG! TV, Studio Sar-Ah features Special Guest, Blain Rage. Sar-Ah and Blain Rage are in conflict throughout this installment of Studio Sar-Ah. Blain Rage accuses Sar-Ah of costing him a victory at the last !BANG! TV Taping by throwing in the towel. Sar-Ah offers proof in wasn’t Blain Rage’s towel she threw in.

Funk’s Corner - Karl Von Brauner

In San Angelo Texas, the ring announcer tried to speak then waited for the crowd to calm down. The noise only grew louder as the heels stood at attention in the ring opposite of my brother Terry and myself.

The ring announcer tried but could not be heard above the roar of the sold out crowd at the San Angelo Coliseum. It seemed a riot was about to begin even before the match got started.

When your Heels have so much heat you cannot introduce them, you have the kind of heat that draws money. A tribute to The Von Brauners, Karl, Kurt and their manager Saul Weingroff..

Not only in San Angelo, but throughout the Amarillo Territory, the Von Brauners drew capacity crowds.

The first time I saw Karl Von Brauner was in my high school days. I will not forget the great match between Karl Von Brauner, (Doug Donavan at the time) and another great worker and high flyer, Larry Chene.

Karl Von Brauner was also an excellent pilot and along with Eddie Graham got me interested in flying airplanes. The Amarillo Territory had some long trips and often we would fly the long shots in private rental planes. Karl would fly the bad guys and I would fly the good guys.

I spent many hours talking to Karl about safety in flying airplanes especially, single engine at night.

I was surprised and saddened to hear of the passing of Karl Von Brauner. Karl spent the last years of his life away from the wrestling business, but his contributions to my learning the wrestling business and aviation are much appreciated.

My condolences to the family of Karl Von Brauner.

Funk’s Corner - Dory Funk Jr. vs Terry Funk Single Match, One and Only Time

One of the most common questions I am asked by wrestling fans is, “Did you ever face your brother, Terry Funk in a wrestling match.”

It happened twice. In our early days in the Amarillo Territory, Terry’s tag team partner was Wahoo McDaniel and I was teaming with Ricky Romero. We met on opposite tag teams in Amarillo, Texas the year after Terry broke in the wrestling business in 1966.

April 30th 1981 in Japan, Terry and I won our way to the finals of a tournament for the All Japan Pro Wrestling International Championship. Terry and I faced each other in the finals of that tournament. The match was video taped and broadcast nation wide by Nippon Television Network. (NTV)

Jim Ross has posted the following on his JRSBarBq.com about Jerry “The King” Lawler running for Memphis Mayor. Lalwer will be quitting the WWE, because the mayor’s position is an full time job.
It looks as it the King is actually going to run for Mayor of Memphis as a special election is apparently going to be held in Memphis in about 90 days. The position of Mayor of Memphis, Tennessee is a full time position and one cannot hold another job, as I understand the matter. Jerry has often talked seriously, yes we did talk seriously on occasion on our many, many road trips together, about how he would like to do something positive for his hometown. Jerry certainly isn’t running for Mayor for the pay day but as an old school, public official who genuinely cares for his hometown and wants to make it better for all who live there. I heard an interview that the King made on a Memphis radio station where he talked about the grueling, weekly travel we undergo about 51 weeks a year for WWE and how that can wear on a person. ( I can definitely relate to that.) Point being is that Jerry has been announcing on Raw since 1994, with the exception of a short interruption in service along the way, logging some staggering miles. Plus, the King will be 60 this year and I can easily see Jerry Lawler being at the right place at the right time of his life to be a galvanizing force for the apparent racially divided Tennessee city of Memphis.

For Monday Night Raw fans, if Lawler wins the Memphis Mayoral race he will have to come off Monday Night Raw which would certainly end an amazing era that started 15 years ago. Jerry and I had approximately 12 great years together sitting at ringside every Monday night during the hottest period ever in WWE but as in all phases of our lives things change.

Funk’s Corner - Funking Conservatory Tribute to Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson loved to entertain. There is nothing like watching his concerts. It is obvious he was happy to be where he was.

It is the same in professional wrestling. Watch the wrestlers. It is obvious the great ones are happy to be where they are and it shows.

In the early 80’s Marti and I were in Charlotte, North Carolina. Michael Jackson’s Thriller, a 14 minute mini movie was hot and we loved to watch it on MTV, over and over. Thriller was the inspiration for the Funking Conservatory Webbies (Mini Movies) we produce for !BANG! TV.

Yesterday, I watched the original production of Thriller. Even now goose pimples jumped out all over me as Michael Jackson transformed into the werewolf.

Michael Jackson was a genius in the world of entertainment. He will be missed by the whole world.

Our heartfelt condolences to his family.
