Response To WWE Protestors

In response to this post, my wife wrote this:

Dear Editor,

I have been watching the news lately and it is very obvious that there is a very vocal group of people that do NOT want the WWE to be allowed anywhere near Burlington. All I can say is that the reasonining is ridiculous. Naysayers claim that the WWE “promotes violence against women”. Have any of these people ever watched some of the most popular shows on television? Both CSI and ER, two of the most popular shows on network television, have had numerous episodes where women were beaten/killed by men. In some of the ER episodes, the woman goes back to the abuser, no matter how much the doctors and nurses try to stop them.

On both sides of my family, my mother’s and my father’s, there has been an extreme amount of domestic violence. My grandmother, numerous aunts, and a few cousins, have all fallen victim to men who abused them. Thankfully, they all managed to leave those men before they were killed. Guess what? NONE of the abusers ever watched the WWE. So what do we blame now? What about decades ago, when it was “fine” to beat your wife, as she was considered to be your property. Can we blame the WWE for that? Oh - wait - it wasn’t in existence then.

Violence, and domestic violence, has been a part of our society for as long as we’ve been around. The ONLY way to stop it is to raise our children correctly and to crack down on it when we see it. Our children are learning more from overworked, underpaid teachers than they are their parents! Parents need to step in and be *gasp* parents instead of friends. If you are worried about what your child is watching, then censor it. More than that, though, help them to understand what is pretend and what is reality.

If you want to stop domestic violence, look at the judicial system. Violent offenders often get nothing more than a slap on the wrist for the offense. How many men beat women due to being high on drugs? Yet someone that gets caught with drugs often gets probation instead of jail time.

Does the WWE have problems? Absolutely - but so does our society. Until neighbors start caring, our children are given values and learn how to respect, and the judicial system starts cracking down, it will keep on happening, whether the offender has watched professional wrestling or not.

I knew there was a reason I married her.

We are definitely going to the show tomorrow, and are looking forward to seeing the wrestlers in action! Our seats are fairly decent, so here’s hoping we get some good shots. I plan on scouting around, as well, to see if I can find any of them hitting a restaurant for lunch. I’m looking forward to seeing The Great Khali live and in person, to see how big he REALLY is. The wife’s looking forward to Rey Mysterio, as he’s on the card to be there! I’m sure she’ll get plenty of shots of him.

So I’ll be absent tomorrow, and then back Monday with tons of pics and the whole low-down from the live show - that is, IF the protestors don’t beat us down before we get into the auditorium!
