Official Smackdown Pre-view: Steel City SmackDown

Friday, August 29th, 2008

In less than two weeks, WWE Champion Triple H defends his title in an unprecedented five-man WWE Championship Scramble Match at Unforgiven. But first, The King of Kings will take on one of his Scramble opponents – United States Champion Shelton Benjamin – on SmackDown in a non-title Champion vs. Champion bout. Can the Gold Standard send a message to Triple H, or will The Cerebral Assassin demonstrate why he is a 12-time World Champion?

Undertaker has made it clear. He’s not interested in forgiving SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero or members of “The Family.” Last week, Chavo Guerrero, Bam Neely, Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder felt The Deadman’s wrath. Who is next?

At SummerSlam, a fired-up Montel Vontavious Porter overcame the high-flying Jeff Hardy in a hard fought bout, thanks in part to the involvement of United States Champion Shelton Benjamin. But on SmackDown, Hardy gets a second chance at MVP in a SummerSlam rematch. Will The Legend Thriller get some payback against SmackDown’s Franchise Playa?

Last week on SmackDown, an angry Big Show expressed his displeasure at not being considered for a WWE Championship Scramble qualifying match by clearing house in the 10-Man Battle Royal. What will The World’s Largest Athlete do this week?

Stay tuned to SmackDown on The CW Network at 8/7 CT as all of SmackDown’s Superstars get ready for battle at Unforgiven.

Unforgiven Match - ECW Championship Scramble

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Tonight in the the Land of the Extreme, Matt Hardy, The Miz, Chavo Guerrero and Finlay all qualified to face ECW Champion Mark Henry in an ECW Championship Scramble at Unforgiven.

Hardy earns first bid
In the first ECW Championship Scramble Qualifying Match of the night, Matt Hardy took on past ECW Champion John Morrison. Exhibiting great tenacity, Hardy pushed the Tuesday Night Delight to his limit in a back-and-forth battle, featuring multiple near pinfalls from both Superstars. In the end, though, Hardy was able to stop Morrison’s signature Moonlight Drive to deliver a hard-hitting Twist of Fate and pick up the win. The victory gives Hardy an opportunity at the ECW Championship – a title he has never held.

Singles success
After enjoying tag team success with John Morrison, The Miz has been looking to make a mark on the singles scene. Tonight, he faced a formidable opponent in Evan Bourne, who has never been pinned on ECW. Using an aggressive offense, The Miz was able to prevent Bourne from engaging in his signature high-flying maneuvers. The strategy paid off for The Miz, who was able to stun the newcomer with a Reality Check and pinfall.

Battle of the former champions
The third ECW Championship Scramble Qualifying Match of the night pitted Tommy Dreamer against Chavo Guerrero – both former ECW Champions. The opportunity for championship gold doesn’t come often, and both veterans knew that going into the match. In the end, it was the self-proclaimed “Mexican Warrior” who earned his chance for the title at Unforgiven by defeating the ECW Original with a Frog Splash.

Second chance
Last week on SmackDown, United States Champion Shelton Benjamin defeated Finlay to qualify for the WWE Championship Scramble at Unforgiven. But tonight, Finlay received a second chance at gold when he faced Mike Knox in the final ECW Championship Scramble Qualifying Match. At odds for weeks, the two engaged in a knock-down, drag-out brawl.

In the end, though, it turned out to be Finlay’s son, Hornswoggle, who was the difference maker in the match. The pint-sized prankster handed his father a shillelagh, which the Belfast Brawler used to go after Knox. But Knox was able to fend off Finlay with a kick to the gut and prevent being clobbered. The ref took the shillelagh from Finlay, but Hornswoggle had a back-up plan – a second shillelagh. This time, his father used it to take Knox out, and simultaneously earn the final spot in the ECW Championship Scramble at Unforgiven.

John Cena ” Blue Collar GUY”

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Jim ross has posted an update on hs website..JR’s bar-B-Q.com. Jr couldn’t believe his eyes that just hours ago, John Cena had surgery and already he was walking around with great spirits.

Late Tuesday afternoon/early evening I am sitting in a make shift catering area in the old Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh going over my notes for Friday Night Smackdown that was to be taped in a few minutes. The catering area was essentially a ghost town as the ECW taping was in progress and others were getting ready for SD. I needed a quiet place to re-write my announcer notes and catering was it. Then came a tap on my shoulder. I turned to see who it was and low and behold it was John Cena….fresh out of surgery.

I was shocked to see John, who had just had neck surgery earlier in the day, up and around much less dropping by the ancient Igloo to simply say hello to “the boys.” As I understand it, a disc in Cena’s neck herniated and a fragment stuck into his spinal cord causing obvious discomfort and numbness down his right arm and into his hand. Dr. Joseph Maroon, a renowned Neurosurgeon and Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers expertly handled the Cena’s repair. This was a procedure that Dr. Maroon called an “emergency surgery.”

John’s surgery was a micro-surgical removal of a large piece of disc material that infringing John’s spine. Cena told me that the doctors took a small piece of bone from a cadaver to use for the neck fusion.

Cena is expected to begin physical therapy next week and could be back in the ring in between 2-4 months according to Dr. Maroon.

Wednesday morning as I was going thru the Pittsburgh Airport one of the security guys said Cena had come thru earlier alone and in excellent spirits and moving just fine.

Cena’s surgery wasn’t as drastic or invasive as what some other WWE Superstar’s have endured and one thing that helped was the quick response time of Cena himself. If John had ignored the symptoms this matter would have ended up an entire different story without the quick and positive results of Tuesday.

Cena, a former offensive lineman in college, still has that blue collar work ethic and toughness that O-Linemen are known for. On the flight back to Oklahoma from Pitt, I got to thinking about how many wrestlers, obviously those not long on character, would have “milked” this injury for all its worth.

Whether one is a fan of Cena’s work or not is beside the point in this discussion as no one with any reasonable amount of common sense can deny Cena’s passion for the business and his dedication to his vocation.

I do know that the WWE is a much better place with Cena than without him.

Cena Update: Surgery as Planned Success..

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

UPDATE: At 3:30 p.m. ET, WWE.com learned that Cena’s surgery was successful and that Dr. Joseph Maroon, renowned neurosurgeon, Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was very positive regarding Cena’s condition.

“We performed a microsurgical removal of a large disk fragment compression on the spinal cord which was weakening the nerve leading to the right arm,” Dr. Maroon told WWE.com shortly after the operation. “We created a small incision in the front of the neck, using an operating microscope, to remove the fragment from the spinal cord and nerve. The operation took approximately an hour and a half.”

Dr. Maroon added, “I think John’s prognosis is excellent. We performed this same procedure on three all-pro NFL players, and all three resumed their football careers.”

WWE’s Dr. Chris Amann, who was on site for Cena’s surgery, agreed with Dr. Maroon’s assessment on the Chain Gang Commander’s successful procedure.

“The surgery went exactly as planned. There were no complications. What we saw in the MRI correlated with what we saw in his disk. Dr. Maroon was able to visualize the disk using a microscope. Right after Cena woke up from the surgery, he said that ‘the pain in his arm and shoulder was gone,’” Dr. Amann recalled.

“As far as what could’ve gone wrong during surgery is infection and not removing all the disk material. In Cena’s case, everything went well,” Dr. Armann added. “Dr. Maroon and I expect a full recovery. In a couple of weeks, he’ll be able to start with leg cardio, and then resistance training in four to six weeks. The bone graft that was put into his neck needs to heal before he can see action.”

PITTSBURGH – On Tuesday, around 5 p.m. ET, John Cena appeared in the locker room area of the Mellon Arena with a huge smile on his face. The three-time WWE Champion was shaking hands not only with Dr. Joseph Maroon, who performed his successful operation earlier today, but also with WWE Superstars and Divas, who were marveling at Cena’s appearance just hours after his serious surgery.

“I feel great. Dr. Maroon is fantastic. He explained every possible procedure he could and could not perform, and the potential risks of all of them,” Cena said. “I explained to Dr. Maroon not only my immediate goals, but also my long-term goals. He took them all into consideration and recommended the most commonplace procedure with the least amount of side effects.”

Cena has been able to keep his sense of humor in tack throughout the ordeal, quipping that “the fusion surgery was so successful, because we used a Gillette Fusion razor.”

Afterwards, John Cena left the arena to head to his hotel for some well-deserved rest.

All in all cena will probably be out for about 4-5 months to get 100% recovery.

Here we go again. Can anyone say, “Airplane Ride From Hell part 3?” For some reason or another, YOUR Host of Hosts seems to always have the most awkward plane ride experiences that one could possibly have. So of course with that being said, YOUR Guiding Light is about to take you along for the ride as well.

It’s 5 a.m. in the morning and I’ve just awakened from a 2 ½ hour sleep following SmackDown/ECW, and it’s time to head to the airport. It’s bad enough that I’d rather remain asleep, but getting home sounds a lot more endearing. Once I arrive to the airport and check in, I have about 15 mins ‘til boarding. I decided to stop for a quick bite so that I can have some food in my stomach. (One should never fly on an empty stomach.) I go to the food counter where I stand in line awaiting my turn to order. Special prosecutor on ex-officer theft case

Associated Press - August 26, 2008 12:24 PM ET

GREENSBURG, Ind. (AP) - A special prosecutor will oversee the theft case of a former Greensburg police officer accused of pocketing money from a scam artist.

A Decatur County Judge appointed Ripley County Prosecutor Rick Hertel to handle the case against 37-year-old David Scudder, who resigned from the force after the investigation began.

Prosecutors say Scudder seized money from a man who was acting as the “promoter” of a man who resembles wrestler-turned-film star “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

During a June 21st event at a Wal-Mart store in Greensburg, Austin’s fans were charged for photos and autographs with the phony Austin before store officials grew suspicious and called police.

According to court documents, Scudder took $154 from the promoter.

Maria Summer Skin: Photos - Video

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

She’s bubbly, she’s beautiful and she’s an object of desire for many men. She’s Maria, and she’s darn proud to call herself a WWE Diva. While many may think she’s ditzy or absent-minded, there’s one thing that’s well-known: she’s hot.

But hey, she wouldn’t have it any other way. Maria has won many beauty pageants in her time, but she’s not just all beauty. From kickboxing to sewing to dancing to working on cars, Maria’s areas of expertise make her one of the best-rounded Divas in WWE.

After years of entering beauty pageants and an education at Northern Illinois University, the Ottawa, Ill., native struck it big by nearly making it to the end of the 2004 Diva Search. While she didn’t win, our fans felt an immediate connection to her, and she quickly made her way to Raw as a backstage interviewer who wasn’t afraid to ask any question, from the hard-hitting to the quirkily obvious. And of course, she looks great doing it, perhaps no more so than when Eugene doused her with chocolate milk after winning the World Tag Team Championship that year.

Since her debut in WWE, however, Maria’s role has expanded by leaps and bounds. At first, she was tentative to step into the ring, but to this day she continues to learn the ropes and develop into an exciting and skilled performer. She also can be seen (or read, as it may be) lending her auto expertise to our fans in her very own WWE Magazine column every month. Another magazine our fans might be interested in perusing is the April 2008 issue of Playboy, in which Maria showed our fans what’s under her hood, namely a racy chassis and va-va-voom curves.

If there’s one other thing for sure about Maria, though, it’s that while she radiates beauty, the girl her friends call “Boop” won’t stop honing her craft until she wears the Women’s gold around her waist. So watch out all you stars and studs in the locker room, because you never know when you’re going to get your dose of Maria.
