Friday Night Smackdown Results 4/13/07

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

180sd.jpg

Friday Night Smackdown from Providence Rhode Island.

The biggest match of the night is billed as a handicapped match between Mr. Kenendy and the team of Finlay and Hornswoggle. In the beginning of the show Mr. Kennedy takes the mic and apologizes for what he did to Hornswoggle during Wrestlemania 23. Hornswoggle accepts the apology and the best match is canceled…unfortunately.

MATCH #1: WWE Tag Team Champions Brian Kendrick & Paul London VS Deuce & Domino w/ Cherry

This is for the WWE Tag Team Championship. Right from the start Deuce and Domino show that they want the championship belt and start to ignore the ref. Because they keep illegally double-teaming, the ref disqualifies them.

WINNERS: Brian Kendrick & Paul London via disqualification

Another Win Without A Pin!

MATCH #2: Chris Benoit vs. MVP

A great match with some serious technical moves by both of these wrestlers. Once again, though Benoit does not get the credit he deserves.

WINNER: MVP via pinfall

MATCH #3: Kane vs. Daivari

Can someone PLEASE explain to me why the WWE keeps pairing Kane up with these wrestlers that are not up to his calibur? Ridiculous match.

WINNER: Kane via pinfall

Directly after the match Kane is attacked by William Regal and Dave Taylor. WWE’s got something cooking, I’m just not quite sure what…

MATCH #4: Batista & The Undertaker VS Finlay & Mr. Kennedy

Due to the public apology by Mr. Kennedy, Teddy Long decided at the beginning of the show that Finlay and Mr. Kennedy would pair up to go against The Phenom and The Animal. Good match, the Undertaker never disappoints and Batista has got some serious power. Despite Batista wanting to get back at the Undertaker for taking his belt at Wrestlemania, the two manage to work great together to win the match.

WINNERS: The Undertaker & Batista via pinfall

It seems like it was a night for the heavyweights of WWE to show themselves as we saw some good matches. Maybe someone from WWE is reading this website because the only T&A we saw was when Jillian attacked Ashley in the locker room over Timbaland’s newest music video.

They also said that Mark Henry would be making his return to Smackdown next Friday night, which should definitely keep things lively!

Cena’s Humble Beginnings

Friday, April 13th, 2007

john_cena_jpg_w300h452.jpg So where does John Cena come from? The WWE Champion got his start in 2000 by training with the Ultimate Pro Wrestling’s (UPW) Ultimate University which is based in California. The wrestler, who will be 30 on April 23, was then signed to a developmental contract with Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), which is the official training ground for WWE hopefuls.

During his time in OVW he also appeared on the UPN reality show Manhunt under the pseudonym “Big Tim Kingman”, the “lead hunter” in a team “hunting” contestant with paintball guns. The show was produced in association with WWE, and it was later revealed that many of the scenes in the show were re-shot or staged to enhance the drama. Contests were rigged to eliminate contestants, and other contestants read from scripts. As a result of the controversy WWE has never referenced the show or Cena’s part in it

The owner and operator of UPW, where Cena began his rise to the top, Rick Bassman, is currently responsible for some major names in the WWE, such as John Cena, Chris Masters, Victoria, Jon Heidenreich, Mike “The Miz” Mizanin and the current WWE Women’s Champion, Melina.

UPW signed an agreement last year with the WWE to become an official talent scout for WWE. The company scouts out aspiring wrestlers and, if they meet the qualifications and have raw talent, are required to only pay the $50 gym membership - all other fees are waived. These individuals also get the priceless opportunity to wrestle in front of WWE officials to possibly become the next John Cena.

Wrestler Injury Updates

Friday, April 13th, 2007
reymysteriosurgery.jpg

Where have all the amazing wrestlers gone? Under the knife, it would seem.

King Booker (Booker T) underwent surgery this week to remove bone fragments from his knee. He will hopefully return within six to eight weeks.

Triple H is still recouperating (and probably enjoying spending time with his wife and new baby Aurora) and is expected to return to the ring in August at Summerslam.

Hardcore Holly is having surgery in a few days to fix a nerve entrapment in his elbow. Doctors estimate that he will be out for three to four months which would put him back on the schedule for mid to late August.

Rey Mysterio Jr. recently had surgery to repair an injury to his knee. While most sources have him back around July, the official WWE site is saying that he is out of action “indefinitely”. Hmmm…I wonder what they’ve got up their sleeves.

Carlito’s Mysterious Past

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007
carlitoanddad.jpg

On Monday Night Raw this week, JR made a comment about Carlito being a second generation wrestler. This, of course, made me extremely curious because I had no clue that Carlito was anything other than a newbie that liked to spit apple pieces at his opponents.

It turns out that Carlito’s father is an extremely famous wrestler in Puerto Rico, where Carlito is originally from. Carlito’s real name is Carly Colón and his father’s name is Carlos Edwin Colón, but he is better known in Puerto Rican’s wrestling as Carlitos Colón.

Carlitos Colón has over 70 scars on his forehead from various wrestling injuries and wears then proudly. In 1983 he took on Ric Flair in a “unification” match and won the NWA World Heavyweight Title, using this to create the WWC (World Wrestling Council) Heavyweight Title.

Although he is retired from wrestling, he is currently training his two sons, one being Carlito, and the other being Eddie Colón, who has just signed a deal with WWE.

Below is a YouTube of Carlitos and his brother Eddie wrestling together, as they frequently did in Puerto Rico.

Stephanie McMahon Promoted

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

stephaniemcmahon.jpg On Tuesday, WWE announced that they had three heavyweights within the organization that were getting promoted.

Brian Gerwitz, creative director for WWE RAW, and Michael Hayes, creative director for WWE SmackDown. They now have the new titles of Vice Presidents of Creative. Hayes is also assuming Pat Patterson’s old position of Senior Agent. Word is that this small move for Hayes is already rubbing some people wrong, since Hayes doesn’t travel to house shows, but will now receive the pay of somebody who should.

Stephanie McMahon-Levesque was also promoted to Executive Vice President of Creative. This job now gives her more control over the Board of Directors and comes along with a nice pay raise.

This promotion will put her a little closer to her brother, Shane McMahon’s salary. Shane is currently the WWE Executive Vice President of Global Media.

In the world of WWE, it pays to have the last name McMahon.

King Booker Has Left The Court

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007
king-booker.jpg

Rumor has it around the internet that King Booker will be out for awhile due to injury. What we’ve heard is that he’ll be out due to “sprain and strained contusion of the neck”. What we haven’t heard is that he’ll really be out due to the knee injurys that Booker has been suffering for awhile. This gives WWE a chance to take him out of the rooster and give him time to heal his knee.

He is expected back by June, at the very latest.

Monday Night Raw Results 4/9/07

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

raw.jpg

Monday Night Raw is live from Bridgeport, Conn - the home of WWE.

Shane McMahon enters the ring and states that since his family honor has been destroyed, he will destroy Bobby Lashley’s honor, by winning his ECW Championship Belt in a match tonight. Lashley agrees with the stipulation that if he wins, Shane gets shaved bald. Shane agrees.

A quick plug for Mick Foley’s new bestseller, The Hardcore Diaires, and we’re off.

MATCH #1 Mickey James & Candice Michelle VS Victoria & Melina

A fairly slow match from these women - most of them can’t wrestle and are only there because they look good in a leotard.

WINNER: Mickey James & Candice Michelle

Mickey’s got her eye on the belt and lets Melina know it.

MATCH #2 Carlito w/ Tori Wilson & Ric Flair VS Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch
Nice opening from Carlito where we get to see pieces of WWE’s newest DVD, featuring 16 time champion Ric Flair and the four horsemen.

Slow match, though. You can tell it’s time for Flair to retire - again. Carlito spices things up but not enough to guarantee the win.

WINNERS:
Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch

The winners will take on the Hardy Boys for a shot at the Tag Team Belt at Backlash.

MATCH #3 Randy Orton VS “HBK” Shawn Michaels

A #1 Contenders match to see who will be the next to go after the WWE Championship. Straight into the match the original ref is knocked out and a new ref comes running down from the back.

Edge comes out to distract Orton and HBK uses the distraction to give Orton some Sweet Chin Music. Orton and HBK both end up on their back entertwined together. Ref #2 calls it, 1-2-3, HBK wins!

The original ref has now come out of his coma and is arguing, saying that Orton is the winner because HBK’s shoulders were on the mat. No winners.

MATCH #4 Matt & Jeff hardy VS The World’s Greatest Tag Team Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin

Mat and Jeff get off some awesome high-flying acrobatics, with Matt getting in his “Twist Of Fate” and both of them flying off the top rope.

WINNERS: Matt and Jeff Hardy

Edge’s little segment, The Cutting Edge (who decided Edge needs a segment?) features John Cena. Jonathan Coachman enters the ring and says that it will be Cena vs Orton vs Edge for the WWE Championship at Backlash.

Mick Foley enters the ring with the honorary GM, Michael Pena, who is being granted his wish from the Make-A-Wish foundation to be the GM of Raw. Foley tells Michael that because this is a huge decision, he needs to figure out what the wrestlers will do.

Michael changes the match to be Cena VS Edge VS Orton VS HBK at Backlash.

MATCH #5 Shane McMahon VS Bobby Lashley (or) Hair VS Belt

Shane O’Mac comes out and immediately hits the ref in order to disqualify himself. The bell rings and Vince and Umaga come out. Shane hits Lashley with a chair, cutting him wide open, and Vince and Umaga both take turns hitting Lashley.

Vince declaires that at Backlash it will be Lashley VS the two McMahons and Umaga.

Not a terrible Raw show, but it was definitely a good example of how some of these televised shows are becoming more like a long infomercial than what they should be, a wrestling match.

McMahon Hair from Wrestlemania 23 SOLD!

Monday, April 9th, 2007
mcmahonhairsale.jpg

WWE made a small bundle from selling Vince McMahon’s hair - you remember, the hair that was shaved off by Donald Trump and Bobby Lashley during Wrestlemania 23?

McMahon has to be the only person I can think of that intentionally made money from shaving his head! Take that Trump! You can check it out Here

Friday Night Smackdown Results 4/6/07

Saturday, April 7th, 2007
180sd.jpg

Welcome to Friday Night Smackdown, live from Fort Wayne, Indiana!

MATCH #1 Mr Kennedy vs Jeff Hardy
After more talking then wrestling, with Mr Kennedy telling the crowds to refer to him as Mr. Money in the Bank, the best part of the match was when Jeff did some of his high-flying stunts off the top ropes.

WINNER: Mr. Kennedy via pinfall

MATCH #2 Chris Benoit vs The Miz
WWE is trying to bring up some of their lower wrestlers, like the Miz, by putting them against some of the top wrestlers, like Chris Benoit. It looks like it might be working, as the Miz was quite a bit better this week, with the help of MVP.

WINNER: The Miz via pinfall

MATCH #3 Matt Hardy vs King Booker

This was a grudge match between Matt hardy and King Booker. Booker was ticked for Matt touching his “true love”, Queen Sharmell, at Wrestlemania and vowed that “someone was going to get hurt.” Unfortunately for King Booker, it wasn’t Matt Hardy!

WINNER: Matt Hardy via pinfall

MATCH #4 Kane vs Dave Taylor w/ William Regal

Talk about a huge jump. At Wrestlemania you’ve got Kane vs The Great Khali - two huge monsters that are suited to face each other, and now we’ve got Dave Taylor? What’s WWE thinking?!

WINNER:
No one - it was a sham of a match set up to hype the crowds.

MATCH #5 Paul London and Brian Kendrick vs Chavo Guerrero/Gregory Helms

Finally we get to the first real match of the night. These two teams are evenly matched and at the start it looks like this match may take awhile. London and Kendrick have had the belt for almost a year so you get this feeling of doom for poor Guerrero and Helms, because, as we know, it’s uncommon that WWE has a belt that’s been in the hands of someone for so long change places during a regular televised event.

WINNER: Paul London and Brian Kendrick via pinfall

All in all not a terrible Smackdown, but I’ve definitely seen better. Let’s hope they’re just saving their energy for all of the matches that are going to occur in the next two weeks while they’re overseas!

Come on WWE - give us fans more matches and less talking before Raw and Smackdown become just one big commercial.

RVD - Contract Renewal?

Friday, April 6th, 2007

rob_van_dam5.jpgRVD’s contract expires at the end of this summer, which is why it was somewhat surprising to see him win the match at Wrestlemania 23.

According to sources, RVD’s contract renewal talks are going extremely well. Everything he is asking for, the WWE is conceeding, including an extended rest period (between 4 and 12 months) to become effective directly after the new contract is agreed upon.

The talk around the locker room is that if the WWE had RVD lose his match at Wrestlemania, it would have upset the contract negotiations.

Right now he has the possibility of earning 400,000 per year with the WWE, and amount that TNA can not hope to match. WWE has also hinted to him that his continued career with their company will result in a long-term commitment from them for continued support with future merchandising, DVD’s, and a shot at the Hall of Fame.

Right now things are looking good for RVD to continue his career with WWE - which is sure to make all of the fans happy.

WWE on iTunes

Friday, April 6th, 2007

wwe_logo.jpgWhen World Wrestling Entertainment releases a new product it does so with an in your face type of marketing. They use their own air space to promote and plug their newest item, giving the fans plenty to chew on. Now, though, WWE has stepped out of it’s comfort zone.

With their latest music release, WWE: The Music Volume 7, they have made no mentions of it on TV. The album is only available on iTunes.

This is the company’s first iTunes-only release. Time will tell if this is a one-shot deal or if there will be more collaborations between Apple and the WWE. Currently, episodes of TNA:iMPACT! are available for download as well. Will we eventually see WWE programming available on the site? We can only dream…but for now here’s the track listing that is currently available for WWE: The Music Volume 7

Mick and Make-A-Wish

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007
foley.jpg

The entire internet seems to agree that Monday Night’s Raw was, to say the least, a bit dull. One of the few things I did find interesting, though, was Mick Foley’s little appearance. In case you missed it falling asleep between all the other talkers, Mick was discussing the WWE and how they work with the Make-A-Wish foundation.

Apparently that’s not the only wish agency the WWE works with. They have also worked with the Starlight Wish Foundation, Kids wish and Dreams Come True.

Mick announced that on next Monday Night’s Raw, the WWE would be making one child’s special wish come true.

After Wrestlemania 20 in New York, the WWE announced what they called the, “Circle of Champions”. Every child that meets a WWE Superstar as the result of a wish made at one of the various foundations recieves a certificate that makes them a member of the elite “Circle of Champions”.

If you’d like to donate to the Make-A-Wish foundation, simply click on it and you’ll be directed to their main site, where you can make a donation that will help a terminally ill child recieve the gift of a lifetime.

The WWE has been granting wishes to children with life-threatening illness since 1982.
